Bihu
Context:
• The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has attended the Bihu Celebrations at the residence of Union Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal in New Delhi.
About:
• Bihu is the name of Assam’s most important celebration. Assamese people celebrate three Bihus, as follows:
• Bohag Bihu: This is Assam’s largest and state festival, which takes place in mid-April. It has to do with the spring season. Rongali Bihu is another name for it. This celebration marks the start of the Assamese New Year as well as the arrival of Spring. It lasts seven days and is known as Haat Bihu (Saat (seven) in Hindi). Chot Bihu, Goru Bihu, Manuh Bihu, Kutum Bihu, Senehi Bihu, Mela Bihu, and Chera Bihu are some of the names for them.
• Magh Bihu: In the middle of January. Associated with the winter season.
• Kati Bihu: in the middle of October, during the autumn season. Kangali (poor) Bihu is another name for this.
• It falls on the autumnal equinox and coincides with the beginning of the Hindu month of Kartik. For one month, people worship and greet Goddess Lakshmi, lighting mustard oil lamps in rice fields, in front of the sacred tulasi (basil) plant, in front of the store (bharal ghar), and so on.
Other Aspects:
• Festive food – pitha (rice cake) and larus (traditional food made of rice, coconut) are prepared.
• Men and women in traditional Muga Silk attires dance to the rhythm of Bihu tunes and beatings of the bihu dhol (traditional drum) across the State.
• Bihu dance is Assam’s most popular folk dance.
