Kerala Radiation

Kerala Radiation

  • According to a pan-Indian study conducted by researchers at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC), background radiation levels or radiation released from natural sources like rocks, sand, or mountains are nearly three times higher in some areas of Kerala than previously thought.
  • One type of energy that can easily travel through material is gamma rays. Despite being highly energetic they are safe unless they are present in high concentrations.
  • Every year, the public should not be exposed to more than 1 millisievert. According to the current research, the typical annual natural exposure is about 0.8 millisievert.
  • The highest radiation level is found in the district of Kollam because of the presence of monazite sands that are high in thorium
  • The presence of granite and basaltic and volcanic rock in south India lead to the presence of higher radiation from uranium deposits
