FloodWatch Mobile App for Flood Information
Context:
In a recent development, the head of the Central Water Commission (CWC) introduced a new mobile application named “FloodWatch.”

The FloodWatch App:
- This mobile application is designed to provide the public with essential information regarding flood situations and forecasts.
- It offers real-time updates for up to 7 days in advance. The app has been developed in-house and boasts a user-friendly interface, featuring both readable and audio broadcasts.
- It’s available in two languages: English and Hindi.
Key Features of the App:
- One of the main highlights of the app is its real-time flood monitoring feature. Users can easily access up-to-date information about flood situations all across the country.
- The app achieves this by utilizing nearly real-time data about river flows from various sources.
- Another important feature is the flood forecast provided for the nearest location. Users can conveniently check flood advisories right on the Home Page, relating to the station closest to their location.
- Additionally, the app offers State-wise and Basin-wise Flood Forecasts (up to 24 hours) or Flood Advisories (up to 7 days). These forecasts and advisories can be accessed by selecting specific stations, states, or basins from a dropdown menu.
Technological Advancements:
- The FloodWatch App employs advanced technologies to ensure accurate and timely flood forecasts. These technologies include the analysis of satellite data, mathematical modeling, and real-time monitoring.
Understanding the Central Water Commission:
- The Central Water Commission holds a prominent position as a Technical Organization in India’s Water Resources sector. It currently operates as a part of the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Department of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation.
Core Functions:
- The commission is primarily responsible for initiating, coordinating, and promoting schemes for the control, conservation, and utilization of water resources throughout the nation.
- These initiatives are undertaken in consultation with the concerned State Governments. Additionally, the commission takes on tasks such as investigations, construction, and execution of relevant schemes.

- The commission is led by a chairman, who holds the status of an Ex-Officio Secretary to the Government of India.
