Recently, the Chief of the Naval Staff inaugurated a pioneering CO2-based Air Conditioning (AC) plant at INS Shivaji.

- The newly unveiled AC Plant is a trailblazing initiative, marking the first of its kind in replacing traditional Hydro Fluro Carbons (HFC) and Hydro Chloro Fluro Carbons (HCFC) based air conditioning systems commonly used onboard ships.
- This strategic move aligns with India’s commitment to the Kigali Agreement of 2016, aiming to progressively phase out the use of HFC and HCFC-based synthetic refrigerants starting in 2028.
- This technology not only conforms to global endeavors in addressing climate change but also supports the Indian Navy’s dedicated efforts to adopt sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives.
- The collaborative development of this advanced system involved contributions from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.
