MeitY Unveils Two Initiatives

Context:

The Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has inaugurated the “Centre of Excellence in Intelligent Internet of Things Sensors” and the “India Innovation Centre for Graphene” in Kerala.

Relevance:

GS-03 (Science and technology)

Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Intelligent Internet of Things (IIoT) Sensors:

  • The CoE in IIoT Sensors has been established at Makers Village, Kochi, through a collaborative effort between MeitY, the Government of India, and the Government of Kerala.
  • This facility aims to drive the development of sensors within the domain of Intelligent IoT systems. It will encompass a diverse range of applications for intelligent sensors in networks, devices, and sensor systems.

India Innovation Centre for Graphene (IICG):

  • India’s inaugural Graphene Centre, IICG, has also been set up at Makers Village, Kochi, in collaboration with MeitY, the Government of India, the Government of Kerala, and Tata Steel Limited.
  • This center is dedicated to promoting research and development, product innovation, and capacity building in the field of Graphene and 2D material systems.

About Graphene:

  • Graphene is a remarkable material consisting of a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb structure.
  • Known for its versatility, it is particularly well-suited for biomedical applications due to its malleability, biocompatibility, transparency, high conductivity, and mechanical robustness.

Graphene Technology:

  • Graphene technology involves the utilization of a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb structure. This revolutionary technology has the potential to penetrate diverse markets and could potentially replace existing production methods.
  • Its characteristics such as strength, adaptability, lightness, and high resistance make graphene a standout material.
  • The incorporation of graphene in rechargeable batteries holds promise for significant advancements in energy efficiency.
