Steel Slag Road Technology

Steel Slag Road Technology

Context:

The Steel Slag Road technology, a collaborative effort between Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), the Ministry of Steel, and leading steel manufacturing companies, is taking India towards the fulfilment of its ambitious ‘Waste to Wealth’ mission.

Main Highlights:

  • The Steel Slag Road technology utilizes waste steel slag from steel production to construct stronger and more durable roads. The process involves removing impurities and metals, using the processed slag as an aggregate for road base or sub-base layers, resulting in high strength, hardness, abrasion resistance, skid resistance, and drainage capacity. This breakthrough technique enables the effective management of approximately 19 million tonnes of steel slag produced in India, fostering large-scale utilization in road construction.
  • The technology has unlocked new horizons by facilitating the large-scale utilization of waste steel slag within steel plants.
  • This ingenious approach has not only effectively managed approximately 19 million tonnes of steel slag but has also addressed the pressing need for sustainable waste disposal.
  • As a testament to its efficacy, this trailblazing technology has been put to the test in road construction across four key states in India—Gujarat, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Surat, Gujarat, takes the honor of being the pioneer in implementing the Steel Slag Road Technology.

Central Road Research Institute (CRRI):

  • Established in 1952, CRRI stands as a key institution of the prestigious CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research).
  • With a primary focus on research and development pertaining to roads, runways, and related endeavours, CRRI’s contributions transcend the boundaries of traditional road engineering.
  • Its relentless commitment to innovation in road construction, maintenance, and beyond exemplifies their dedication to a sustainable and eco-friendly future.
  • The Steel Slag Road Technology is just one of their many breakthroughs reshaping the nation’s infrastructure landscape.
