Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system:

  • It is developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation.
  • This missile system was recently launched from a ground mobile launcher stationed at the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast.
  • Key features:
    • Its has capability to launch lightweight torpedoes, enabling it to target submarines located hundreds of kilometers away, surpassing the traditional range of such torpedoes. It is particularly useful in situations where immediate action is necessary upon detecting an enemy submarine.
    • This canister-based missile system boasts advanced subsystems, including two-stage solid propulsion and precision inertial navigation.
    • It is equipped with an advanced lightweight torpedo missile as its payload, and also incorporates a parachute-based release mechanism.
    • The successful test of this system has validated various state-of-the-art mechanisms, including symmetric separation, ejection, and velocity control.
