Germany may offer the sale of advanced submarines to India
Context:
Germany is expected to present a proposal to India for the sale of advanced conventional submarines through the government-to-government route, it is learned. The Navy, which is staring at a dwindling sub-surface fleet, is looking to procure six advanced diesel-electric submarines under Project-75I estimated to cost over ₹45,000 crores

- The Project 75(I) initiative calls for the indigenous construction of submarines outfitted with cutting-edge Air Independent Propulsion systems for Rs. 43,000 crores.
- The Indian Navy’s 30-year plan for indigenous submarine construction includes Project 75 (I), which was authorized in 2007.
- It will be the first under the strategic partnership model, which was announced in 2017 to boost indigenous military manufacturing.
- Germany is working on a plan to sell advanced conventional submarines to India through the government-to-government (G-to-G) channel.
- The Indian Navy plans to purchase six advanced diesel-electric submarines under Project-75I, which is expected to cost more than 45,000 rupees.
- The proposal is anticipated to be formally presented during the German Defense Minister’s visit to India in the coming months.
- Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (South Korea), Naval Group (France), Navantia (Spain), Rosoboronexport (Russia), and Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems are the five foreign original equipment makers (OEM) shortlisted for the P-75 deal. (TKMS, Germany).
- The Request for Proposal (RFP) was released in July 2021, with Mazgaon Docks Ltd. (MDL) and Larsen & Toubro as Indian partners. (L&T).
